Our mission statement charges our congregation to be "revolutionary in our hope and love." But how was Jesus revolutionary? This short course will meet four Sundays in the Fall of 2026 and focus discussions on the context of Jesus's life in a Roman-dominated world, the substance of "the word and the way" in that context, and the lasting impact Jesus's teachings had on elements of culture, philosophy, and religion.
This four-week course will start with the context of Jesus's ministry in Roman-dominated Judea. Specific topics and questions will include:
- September 20: The Context of the Roman World
- How did Rome govern its provinces in the First Century of the Roman empire?
- What actions, events, and movements did they consider to be "revolutionary?"
- September 28: The Context of the Jewish State
- What were the primary dynamics Jewish Politics in and around the Sanhedrin?
- How did Jewish Traditions of Prophets and Prophecy affect their (and our) understanding of "The Word" and "The Way"?
- October 11: The Substance of the Way and the Word
- What is more revolutionary — the Sermon on the Mount or the Cleansing of the Temple?
- October 18: Revolutionary Impacts
- How did the events of Jesus's life affect culture, philosophy, and religion?
- Were these effects revolutionary?
- What does being "revolutionary in our hope and love" mean to you?
