Opportunities Throughout the Week

Sunday

Begin your week by gathering with others to explore Scripture, deepen your faith, and prepare for worship. Three welcoming discussion-based classes meet each Sunday at 9:30 a.m., and visitors are always invited to join.

Fellowship Class
Meets: Sundays • 9:30 a.m. • Room LL009
Group Leaders: Allen Hogge, Larry Pulley, and Ken Crumbly

The Fellowship Class lives up to its name, offering a welcoming community where Christian friendship and thoughtful Bible study go hand in hand. Whether you're a lifelong student of Scripture or simply eager to explore God's Word more deeply, you'll find engaging conversation and warm fellowship.
A team of experienced teachers leads in-depth, discussion-based studies that explore how Scripture speaks to our lives and calls us to faithful service in today's world. Join us as we seek to know God more deeply, understand ourselves more honestly, love others more faithfully, and live more wisely and obediently. All are welcome, and Bibles are provided.
Present Word Class
Meets: Sundays • 9:30 a.m. • Room LL011
Group Leader: Pete Hoyle

Also known as the Alpha Class, the Present Word Class offers a welcoming place to explore Scripture, share faith, and prepare for the week ahead. Using the PC(USA) Present Word curriculum, our rotating team of leaders guides engaging conversations that emphasize discussion, reflection, and shared insights rather than lecture.
Whether you join us for one Sunday, one quarter, or many years, you'll find a place to learn, grow, and connect.
Thoughtful Christian Class
Meets: Sundays • 9:30 a.m. • Room LL010
Group Leaders: Brennan Harris, Sarah Smith, and Elaine McBeth

The Thoughtful Christian is a discussion-based class for those who enjoy exploring the connections between faith and the issues shaping our world today. Through respectful conversation and shared learning, participants consider how Christian faith informs compassionate action and faithful living.
Current studies focus on topics of social justice using resources from Williamsburg Presbyterian Church, PEVA, and the PC(USA), as well as contemporary philosophy and thought-provoking articles from national news organizations. We prefer shorter lessons and more time for discussion. New participants are always welcome.

Our classes and studies cover a wide range of topics. Click the accordions below for summaries of each group and to find the right fit for your inquisitive mind!

The Forgotten Epistles (James, John, Peter): What do they say to us living in the 21st century?
When is the last time you’ve read those short little books at the end of the New Testament, written by James, John, and Peter? Do you know who the James, John, and Peter were who wrote these books, and who they were writing to? Have you struggled to understand what James meant by “so faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead”? Or are you comforted by Peter’s words to “maintain constant love for another, for love covers a multitude of sins”? But best of all you’ll hear the wonderful message that God is love, through the words of John.

Join the Fellowship Class this fall on Sunday mornings at 9:30am in Room LL009, as together we delve deeply into what these words mean for us today, and how we can apply them in our daily lives. Be prepared for a lively discussion facilitated by a team of experienced teachers.
The Soul of Israel: An Old Testament Exploration
Ever wonder what happened to the Israelites after wandering in the wilderness for 40 years and finally settling in the Promised Land? Guided by the Bible texts of Joshua, Judges, and 1st & 2nd Samuel, we will look at how the Israelites occupied the Promised land, learned to live no longer as slaves, and grew in their relationship with the Lord – much of this with mixed success.

Join the Present Word Class on Sundays at 9:30am in room LL011 to learn more.
Faith Meets the Issues of the Day
Join us as we explore the connections between faith and the issues shaping our world today. Through respectful conversation and shared learning, we contemplate how Christian faith informs faithful living. You are invited to join the Thoughtful Christian Class on Sundays at 9:30am in room LL010.
What is a Covenant?
Often when something new is beginning there is a time when all parties work on an agreement, such as a contract. So, as the new program year begins The Squares will look at the very beginning of our faith story and consider a “covenant.” What is a covenant and why is a covenant important? While considering Genesis 17:1-8, we’ll ask what happened then, and how does that same thing happen to us today? You are invited to join The Squares on the first Thursday of the month at 7:00pm in room 227.
Invitation to John: “Come and See” (John 1:39)
Join us as we explore the Gospel of John in an 11-week study (through Dec. 1). Learn how John’s gospel differs from the synoptic gospels and is often described as the spiritual gospel. The class will use Invitation to John, a short-term Disciple Study with a participant study book, leader guide, and video presentation. The focus is on encountering, examining, and interpreting God’s Word in a small group setting, which invites discussion and fosters fellowship. The Tuesday Bible Study group meets on Tuesdays in Room 220 from 10-11:30am.
Characters, Context , and Conversation
Join the WPC Book Club for an opportunity for lively discussion of fictional characters, historical events and/or current issues. Our reading list for the coming year will includes:
• The Bully Pulpit: Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, and the Golden Age of Journalism, by Doris Kearns Goodwin (our September selection)
• The Correspondent, by Virginia Evans
• Whistler, by Ann Patchett
• The Book Club for Troublesome Women, by Marie Bostwick
• Raising Hare: A Memoir, by Chloe Dalton

The group meets on the 4th Monday of the month (varies in the summer/near holidays) at 2 p.m. in Room 220. Zoom attendance is also available.
Hidden Gems of The Old Testament
Looking for a way to start the day with good food, meaningful conversation, and God’s Word? If so, come hungry in every sense, and join Men’s Bible and Bacon for a home-cooked breakfast and lively discussion centered on practical Christian living. We meet on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month from 7:30-8:30am in Stevenson Hall. Zoom participation is also available. We study several topics throughout the year. We are currently studying Hidden Gems of the Old Testament. Join the men for coffee, fellowship, and lively bible discussion. Our signature home-cooked eggs and bacon are back!
United through Christ, Bound to Each Other: Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians
Paul wrote at a time when Christians expected Jesus’ imminent return; he challenged his friends to be ready when that day came. Two thousand years later, the church is still waiting, still affirming that Jesus will return, and still proclaiming that this world has already been transformed by God’s life-giving love. Our challenge remains to live in ways that demonstrate our trust in the resurrection.

Join one of the 8 Presbyterian Women’s Circles as we contemplate the answers to questions asked so long ago. How can our lives demonstrate our trust in Jesus Christ’s victory over death? What do we do when different understandings of the gospel undermine church unity? How can Christians understand gender and sexuality? When conflict arises, how do we deal with it? Details on the various meeting days and times can be found in the Daily Opportunities section of this page.
