The Path Ahead: Spirituality & Purpose Later in Life

Growing older is inevitable. Growing older on purpose is a choice.

At Williamsburg Presbyterian Church, our Aging on Purpose ministry embraces a simple truth: we can’t stop aging, so let’s learn how to do it well. Aging on purpose means approaching later life not as something that simply happens to us, but as a season we intentionally live with faith, hope, courage, and openness to God’s continuing work in our lives.

A Different Story About Growing Older

Our culture often tells us that growing older is primarily a story of decline—that our best years are behind us and our value is measured by youth, productivity, and independence. Scripture tells a different story. Again and again, God calls, forms, and uses people in the later seasons of life.

Rather than viewing older adulthood as a season defined by loss, we are invited to discover it as a season rich with wisdom, spiritual growth, freedom, deeper relationships, and new possibilities for faithful living.

Honoring the Realities of the Journey

During this class, we’ll honestly explore both the opportunities and the challenges that come with growing older. We may be retired—but God’s call never retires. Our relationships with family, friends, and colleagues may change, but God’s relationship with us never changes.

We may face physical limitations, some expected and others unexpected. We may find ourselves caring for a spouse, grieving the loss of loved ones, adapting to changes in health, or wondering what purpose remains after retirement or other major life transitions. These realities are part of the journey, but they are not the whole story.

From Aging Successfully to Aging Faithfully

This class is an invitation to reframe what it means to grow older. Rather than simply asking how to age successfully, we’ll discover what it means to age faithfully.

Together, we’ll celebrate the gifts, wisdom, resilience, and ongoing ministry of older adults while challenging the ageism that too often shapes our culture—and sometimes even our own expectations.

The Path Ahead

The path ahead is not defined by endings, but by the God who continues to call us forward. God’s call never retires—and neither do the possibilities for growth, love, purpose, and faithful living.

I look forward to seeing you there.
