Playground Church: Connecting All Summer Long
This summer, the Children's Ministry Team, with the support of the Christian Education Committee, is excited to invite families to a brand-new way to gather as a church family: Playground Church.
Inspired by feedback from families and a desire to stay connected during the busy summer months, we invite all families to join us on July 11 and August 8 at 9:00 a.m. for a time of community-building and worship on our playground.*
A Place to Play, Worship, and Connect
Designed especially for preschool and elementary-age children, Playground Church offers a safe and welcoming space for play, connection, and faith formation. After some time to run, climb, and burn off energy, we'll gather to pray, sing, and hear scripture together in a format created with short attention spans in mind. We'll wrap up with a snack, and families are welcome to stay and play as long as they'd like.
Growing in Faith Through Play
We know that children learn through play, and we hope this playful summer worship experience will provide meaningful opportunities for children and parents alike to grow in faith and build relationships. We also hope it becomes a wonderful way for parents to connect throughout the summer.

There's no registration or RSVP required—just come as you are and worship through play! Friends, neighbors, and extended family members are warmly welcome as well.

Children Belong in Worship
Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) leaders encourage children to participate in the full worship experience as part of their faith formation. The Westminster Catechism teaches that our purpose is to glorify God, and children are a blessing to the worshiping community.
At Williamsburg Presbyterian Church, we welcome families into the sanctuary to worship together. While age-specific programs can be valuable, we also believe children grow in faith by praying, singing, listening, and serving alongside the larger church family.
Practical Tips for Families
- Arrive early. This allows time to check in at the nursery, find a comfortable seat, and explore the book cart.
- Sit near the front. Children often engage more fully when they can easily see what is happening.
- Use worship resources. Children's worship bags, bracelet-making activities, and bulletins can help young worshipers connect with the service while providing quiet activities.
- Engage actively. Encourage children to watch, imitate, and ask questions. Wiggles and whispers are part of learning, and kid noise is welcome!
- Support individual needs. Sensory baskets are available at each sanctuary entrance and include items such as sensory toys, noise-canceling headphones, and sunglasses.
- Stay connected. Consider planning time with other families after worship—perhaps a picnic lunch, a visit to the WPC playground, or a walk through Colonial Williamsburg with a shared treat along the way.
