Gathering Spaces: Interior Spaces

September 30, 2022

The Town Hall Meeting on October 8th will be a little different this year. A facilitated discussion is planned about how to revitalize some of the most visible areas of our church. The three areas we will contemplate are the Richmond Road streetscape, the grounds and entrance to the building from Prince George Street, and interior spaces like the rear Welcome Lobby and Stevenson Hall. This Interior Spaces description is the second of three installments.

Collage of Current Interior Spaces

Session asked the Gathering Spaces committee for “recommendations to broaden the appeal and use of WPC gathering spaces” -- to think big. This article is about internal spaces such as Stevenson Hall, the hallway between the sanctuary and Stevenson Hall, and possibly repurposing adjacent spaces and rooms.

Objectives for Internal space modifications

  • Make our facility more appealing and useful to members and our community.
  • Increase opportunities to connect with one another.
  • Open WPC to possible new community uses.
  • Comfortably accommodate several groups of friends, family or visitors–standing or seated–between the sanctuary and Stevenson Hall.
  • Access the sanctuary or Stevenson Hall easily and safely in a space that rarely feels crowded.

What if...

What if we could make our facility more appealing and useful to members and our community? Imagine gathering spaces that allow us to rethink existing programs or create new ones to serve our congregation and the community. We could easily expand current outreach or educational programs and possibilities. We could increase opportunities to connect with one another as well as to have our gathering spaces be more useful, welcoming, modernized and well-appointed. We could be more open to new, approved community uses.

Imagine

Imagine entering WPC to a large open and comfortable space. Turn one way to enter the sanctuary. Turn the other way to enter Stevenson Hall. Imagine a space accommodating several small groups of friends, family or visitors – standing or seated. It feels comfortable, even intimate. Access is to the sanctuary or Stevenson Hall is easy and the space rarely feels crowded. There are no safety concerns entering and exiting the area.

Play with the Possibilities

Play the Etch-a-Sketch game in your mind and imagine entering WPC from Richmond Rd or Prince George Street parking lot and seeing no walls except those defining the sanctuary and Stevenson Hall. How could we use this space differently to make it more useful and appealing?
