As summer approaches, many publications will soon release their annual summer reading lists. I thought I’d share a few of my own recommendations with you.
A Powerful Retelling: James by Percival Everett
First on my list is James by Pulitzer Prize winner Percival Everett. This remarkable novel is a retelling of Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Finn from the perspective of James—the enslaved man who escapes down the Mississippi with Huck. Everett’s version offers a fresh, powerful voice and a deeply moving narrative.
A Life of Faith: Pilgrim: A Theological Memoir by Tony Campolo
I’m also reading Pilgrim: A Theological Memoir by Tony Campolo, who passed away in November. I had the privilege of leading worship with Tony at Chautauqua. In the early 1960s, he pastored just down the street from Ellen’s father in Pennsylvania. His memoir is a humble and inspiring reflection on his faith journey.
Short Reflections: A is for Alabaster by Anna Carter Florence
If you’re looking for a book you can pick up, read a chapter, and return to later, I recommend A is for Alabaster: 52 Reflections on the Stories of Scripture by Anna Carter Florence. Anna, a homiletics professor and gifted preacher, offers insightful meditations on 52 biblical characters from both the Old and New Testaments. Her reflections are both thought-provoking and spiritually enriching.
A Voice from the Holy Land: The Sermon on the Mount by Elias Chacour
Lastly, I’m reading The Sermon on the Mount: An Invitation to Receive and Advance the Reign of God, Then, Across Time, and Now by Father Elias Chacour. During our trip to Israel, we visited Father Chacour’s church in Ibillin. His school, Mar Elias Educational Institution, is a beacon of hope, educating Christian and Muslim children side by side in Palestine.
Wishing You a Restful Summer
I hope this summer gives you the time to read, relax, and reflect. May these book recommendations offer inspiration along the way.
Peace,
John
