Faith Formation for Adults - Fall Opportunities

September 08, 2023

SUNDAY MORNING CLASSES

Present Word Bible Study

The Present Word Adult Bible study for Fall 2023 will be looking at the contrast between the Love of God, i.e. the Love of Jesus, and the Law as means for our salvation. The texts are from various gospels, one from Acts, and also from various epistles of Paul.

Our class meets during the 9:30am Sunday School hour in room 011 on the lower lever of WPC. All are welcome; come and enjoy the conversation for a Sunday, a month, or forever.  With thanks to the Deacons for Fellowship Hour, coffee is available.  For more information on our class, contact Pete Hoyle.

Fellowship Class: A Bible Study for Adults

The Fellowship Class mission is to grow in our understanding of the Bible; to grow in relationship to Jesus Christ and to one another; and to grow as committed disciples following closely the teachings of Jesus. We encourage you to grow with us!

Romans 1:12
That is, that we may be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith, both yours and mine.

The format is part lecture, part discussion with the focus alternating between the New and Old Testaments - Hebrews was the summer focus and fall 2023 begins a study of the books Ruth and Samuel.

You can jump in anytime! Be prepared to be engaged by the Word, enlightened by the discussion, and warmly received by the group. A typical Sunday morning you will find about 30 adults in attendance at 9:30 am in Room 009 on the lower level.

For questions or for more information, please contact one of the class coordinators: Larry Pulley or Allen Hogge.

WEEKDAY BIBLE STUDIES

Invitation to Romans

This is an eight-week hybrid study beginning Monday, September 18 through Monday, November 6, 2023. Join is in room LL011 9:30am-11am.

Exploring how people have interpreted Romans through the ages is a good lens to view the history of Christianity itself. Compare what Paul writes in Romans to what theologians like Augustine, Luther and Calvin say in trying to understand Paul and his radical vision of God's relationship to both Christians and Jews and to their relationship to each other, thanks to the "love of God in Christ Jesus." The weekly sessions include a video lead by a church historian, a theologian, and a storyteller, who shares snapshot views of how Romans has been read through history.

Participants for this Invitation to Romans do not have to have an in-depth knowledge of the Bible to enjoy and benefit from participation. Reading just two chapters of Romans a week, you will discover the life altering stories that will invite you to follow Christ as true disciples.  New members are always welcome. Any questions or if you are interested in joining, contact Debbie Riley.

Christian Believer: Knowing God with Heart and Mind

This hybrid study meets on Tuesday morning beginning September 12, 2023 – May 7, 2024, at 10:00am – 11:30am in Room 220.

This study assumes that most church goers tend to know little about the central teachings of the Christian faith and its ties to Scripture. Issues of the heart and the insights of the mind come together in this topical study of basic tenets (such as Providence, Salvation, Atonement, Sanctification, Grace….) of the Christian faith. The aim of this study is to understand what we believe as Christians and its ties to scripture. God and faith are revealed as we study scripture in context. The Study Manual guides daily reading in scripture. The Readings book includes brief selections from the writings of ancient and modern Christian commentators on the great doctrines of the Christian faith. Each week participants will also view video presentations by leading Bible scholars and participate in discussion. Please contact Sarah Avellar for more information or to join. New members are always welcome.
