INTRODUCING THE TEACHER SUPPLY SHOP

This year’s Luncheon will support the Teacher Supply Shop. This private nonprofit organization offers classroom supplies at no cost to the more than 1,000 teachers and staff of the sixteen Williamsburg-James City County (WJCC) Schools.
It has been said that teaching is the one profession that creates all professions. Most people would agree that public school teachers play an invaluable role in nurturing young minds, building character, and promoting skills that benefit their students for a lifetime. High-quality schools and an educated workforce greatly contribute to a healthy, vibrant community.
Teacher salaries are not necessarily commensurate with their value to students or the community. The starting salary for an entry-level teacher in WJCC Schools is about $55,311, with an average salary of about $63,000 (Virginia Department of Education). A recent study found that 94% of teachers spend $500–$1,000 of their own money on classroom supplies annually (National Center for Educational Statistics). The Teacher Supply Shop helps alleviate this financial burden on WJCC Schools’ teachers and staff by helping to subsidize their classroom needs.
IN MEMORY OF PENNY PULLEY
This year’s Local Mission honors the memory of PW member Penny Pulley, who served as Chair of the WJCC Schools Foundation from 2019 to 2025. The nonprofit Foundation partners with the community to enrich, inspire, and innovate in WJCC schools through public support. The Teacher Supply Shop, initiated and still supported by the Foundation, was near and dear to Penny’s heart.
