"Bear one another's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ." -- Galatians 6:2

The Board of Deacons serves the congregation in a multitude of ways, from offering comfort and support, to serving those who are sick, bereaved, and have special needs, and celebrating joyful seasons with the congregation. Our Deacons strive to create an active and caring church by involving members in various social activities designed to help them to better know and appreciate the church and each other.

The Deacons welcome additional hands as they care for the many needs of the church and its members. Click the "Board of Deacons" link on the Get Involved page to help with this very important work of the church.

Our Deacon Mission Teams

Celebrations and Concerns

This team provides care through notes, cards, and contacts to those who are ill, hospitalized, or homebound. Some examples of these events are the birth of a baby, dealing with the death of a family member, welcoming new members, maintaining and overseeing the Prayer Chain, and special celebrations such as anniversaries and graduations.

Christian Fellowship

The team hosts the coffee fellowship time between Sunday services, and within this team is a group who helps to provide various fellowship events, such as the Annual Church Picnic, Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper, Dinner 8, and New Member Receptions.

Confirmation

This mission team prepares those usually in 8th grade for church membership. These Deacons work with the Director of Educational Ministries to teach students about faith, theology, worship, Presbyterianism, and how to use their gifts in service to God.

Family Deacons

Seeking to serve and care for the congregation, every Deacon regularly reaches out to and supports a group of families through the Family Deacon mission team.

Flower Sharing

Coordination of the distribution and delivery of flowers to church members who are ill or confined to hospitals, nursing homes, or at home is handled by this team.

Membership

The membership mission team works to serve both current members by maintaining fellowship register data, as well as the New Member orientation classes.

Memorial Services

This mission provides a special and caring service for members by coordinating with the WPC and funeral home staff as required. Logistical planning with the city, W&M College, and other churches is required for ample parking space for both the service and reception. Mission members attend to family needs, staff the guest books and usher. Within this mission is also the “Waiting in the Wings” program which includes volunteers who can be called upon to help when needed.

Memorial Receptions

This mission is in charge of providing a reception following a funeral or memorial service when requested by the family. The church provides punch and cookies and supplies (e.g. plates, napkins, trays, cups). The Mission has six permanent members, but volunteers are welcome.
