Children and Youth Choirs

"O give thanks to the LORD, call on God's name, make known God's deeds among the peoples. Sing to God, sing praises to God; tell of all God's wonderful works." -- Psalm 105:1-2

The music staff of Williamsburg Presbyterian Church knows that your child’s education is important.  We offer a variety of opportunities for your child to develop their God-given musical ability.  All of our youth and children’s choirs work on vocal music and handbell music, which, in addition to being more fun, gives our participants a more well-rounded background in music.

A child that regularly participates in one or more of our choirs from Kindergarten through High School will become musically literate, allowing them to enjoy and participate in the musical life of any church or community they become a part of when they are adults.  In conjunction with our Christian Education ministry, participating in a choir can also be an important part of a child’s spiritual development, providing many opportunities for meaningful discipleship.

The Carol Choir

Open to Children in Kindergarten through 2nd Grade
Director Rebecca Elton
Rehearses Thursday Afternoons 4:30 to 5:15pm

The Carol Choir offers very young children a first encounter with organized music making.  The emphasis is on simple rhythmic and melodic exercises, using simple musical examples to introduce young minds to the idea that music, like English, is a language that they can learn and enjoy.  The Carol Choir meets at the same time the Junior Choir, making participation convenient for families with children in both age groups.

Junior Choir

Open to Children in 3rd through 5th Grade
Director Chris Bechtler–(757) 229-4235
Rehearses Thursday Afternoons 4:30 to 5:30pm

The Junior Choir introduces older elementary school age children to the fundamentals of musical notation, vocal and handbell technique, sacred music history, and liturgy.  The language of music incorporates ratios, fractions, proportions and thinking in space and time that can also help young minds as they encounter basic and advanced mathematical concepts.  The Junior Choir is also a place where children learn the importance of Christian discipleship, reinforcing all that they encounter in Sunday School and other Christian Education opportunities offered by the church. The members of the Junior Choir are encouraged to pray for and support one another.  The Choir participates in worship several times a year.

The Youth Choir

Open to all Middle and High-School age Youth
Director Chris Bechtler
Rehearses Sunday afternoons, 4:30 to 5:30pm

The Youth Choir offers opportunities for young people to develop their musical abilities as they prepare both vocal and bell music for use during worship throughout the school year.  If you’ve been a member of the Carol and Junior Choirs, you’ll continue learning the language of music and the basics of vocal technique.  If this is your first time joining a choral or bell choir you’ll experience the unique satisfaction making music for worship provides.  The Youth Choir rehearses Sunday evenings just before our Mid-High and Senior-High Presbyterian Youth Fellowship group meetings.
