WPC is affiliated with two of the 48 Young Adult Volunteers (YAVs) serving in missions nationally and internationally for the 2018-2019 term. Read on to learn more about the program, our YAVs Lauren and Miguel, and how you can support them. Below is a brief excerpt of some FAQs from the Presbyterian Mission Agency. To learn more, you can navigate to the PCUSA site.
The Young Adult Volunteer (YAV) program is a ministry of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) which sends young adults, ages 19-30, into a year of service at one of our 20 partner sites in the United States and around the world. YAVs begin their service in late August, beginning with a week of Orientation, and return in late July or early August of the following year.
It costs the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) an average of $22,000 to send a YAV for a year of service. Of that total cost, the PC(USA) covers more than three quarters. YAVs commit to fundraising a minimum $4,000 (National) and $5,000 (International) fundraising effort to contribute to the cost of service.Fundraising is most often done through the support of the volunteer’s home congregation. PCUSA asks all YAVs to participate in the fundraising process.
Lauren Hoak recently graduated from The College of William and Mary, with degrees in music and psychology. Beginning in August, she will be living and serving in Scotland for a year and is so excited to serve others in the name of God, and in the beautiful land of Scotland. She describes a 22-year-old musician, adventurer and dreamer originally from Winchester, Virginia.

Miguel Petrosky graduated in 2017 from The College of William and Mary with a BA in government and a minor in music. Miguel has served this past year in New Orleans. This year he is placed in Zambia, Africa, and couldn’t be more excited! This first YAV year has stretched him and helped him grow, so he’s thrilled to be given a chance to serve and stretch in an international context.
