Spirit

Wishing for a big brother champion seems common among kids of all generations. When I was young, I thought Superman and Batman could put down any nemesis of Gotham City. Later, my kids saw Luke Skywalker call in Yoda and The Force to levitate sky raiders and light sabers, shoot deadly laser beams and guide bombs into the Death Star. Still later, my grandchildren dreamed of Harry Potter’s ability to blast the hounds of hell off the planet with a flick of a wand. Maybe we all grow up wanting an intermediator who can hammer down our enemies.

However, as maturing Christians, we realize it’s not so important who is on our side fighting for us, but who is within us, transforming us and those we encounter. That makes all the difference. “If you love me you will obey my commands; and I will ask the Father, and he will give you another to be your Advocate, who will be with you forever—the Spirit of truth. The world cannot receive him, because the world neither sees nor knows him; but you know him, because he dwells with you and is in you.” (John 14:16-18) With the Holy Spirit shining within and around us, we learn it is much better to win over an adversary by sincerely sharing truth and love with him than it is to beat him into submission. With “Pow!” everyone loses; with “Wow!” everyone gets loved. It may take longer, but it always works.
