Dec 4: God with Us, Even in The Darkest Times

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” - Psalm 34:18

I went from being a Navy wife in London to being a single mother raising 2 children alone back in South Dakota. I supported them working as the charge R.N. on a psych admission ward at the state hospital. Life was tough, I thought! Then in 1980 as my 6 year old son was coming home from school, he was hit by a truck. His head was split open. That night he had surgery to remove fragments of bone from his brain. The doctors told me that he may not live or ever regain consciousness. He stayed in a coma for 17 long days with scant hope for recovery. As I sat by his bed in ICU holding his little hand, I had to prepare myself that this may be my last days with my son. My grief was unbearable.

One day I was given the gift of a beautiful mental image. God was there, holding Patrick in his big, loving hand. He was deciding whether He would take my son with Him or give him back to me. Suddenly I felt comfort and peace. God was with me! I could endure whatever was in store—losing my child or caring for a severely handicapped child. The coma gradually lifted and after some months he could come home. Years of rehab and healing followed. It was difficult, but God was with me and I made it through those years.

My son is now 46 and is able to live on his own and support himself. Even though he has limitations, he never considers himself disabled. He is a kind, caring person with a positive attitude.

Dear God, Help us to remember that you are always with us, even in the darkest times. Help us to see that You can touch us and bless us when we least expect it.
