In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid; for see—I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying . . . –Luke 2:8-13 (NRSV)

Who is the Messiah the Lord? We all know what the Bible tells us about Jesus the Messiah. The usual answer is "son of God" or "my savior". That is right, but who is Jesus to you personally, and how did you come to understand?

Since before I can remember I have attended Sunday school, and have even taught many lessons on who Jesus is? But I really came to know him through the moving of the Holy Spirit in my life, and the many people who love God and also loved me. I remember my parents who sacrificed, and tolerated so much for me. I remember Bud Francis who challenged me to do things I didn't think I could because he believed in me, and who said, "we will not run the score up on the other team because that would add insult to injury," teaching me to love my neighbor. I remember Glenn Bannerman who provided me with many leadership opportunities, and often pushed me beyond my comfort zone. Through his example Glenn also taught me that all people, particularly the lowly, are lifted up in the kingdom of God. And there are many others in my life who showed me who the Messiah is.

You too show others who the Messiah is by the way you live. Be careful, someone is watching, so put on a good show because God too is watching.

Dear Jesus,
We know you as Emmanuel (God is with us). And we know you did not come just to be a baby in a manger, but to reveal God to us. Be with us and guide us as we share with others just who the Messiah is.
