“There's only now, there's only here
Give in to love or live in fear
No other path, No other way
No day but today”
These lyrics were written by Jonathan D. Larson, creator of the wildly popular musical, Rent. Larson is almost known more for his untimely death, as opposed to his life. On the night before Rent was to debut on Broadway, he died from an aneurysm, just shy of his 36th birthday. He would never see the results of his hard work, his timely storytelling, his non-stop creating, but Rent would have a lasting impact on the arts and give hope and comfort to a lost generation in the 90s and beyond. His words ring true even today and echo the sentiments told by Jesus in his parable of the rich fool.
“In these dangerous times, where it seems the world is ripping apart at the seams, we can all learn how to survive from those who stare death squarely in the face every day, and we should reach out to each other and bond as a community, rather than hide from the terrors of life at the end of the millennium.” Larson
Luke 12:20-21 Revised Standard Version (NRSV)
20 But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life is being demanded of you. And the things you have prepared, whose will they be?’ 21 So it is with those who store up treasures for themselves but are not rich toward God.”
When it is your time to account for your life, will you have uselessly hoarded treasures out of greed and fear? Or will you have shared your riches, whether they be actually money or gifts and talents, with those around you to serve them and enrich their lives?
The choice is yours today: give in to love or live in fear. What will you choose?
