“Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophecy in part, but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears. When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known. And now these three remain: faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love.” –1 Corinthians 13: 8-13.

You never realize how difficult it is to be an adult until you are one. Sure, you might hear your parents complain around the middle of April about taxes, and they might give you the occasional lecture on the virtues of responsibility, but that is a far cry from actually living it. You have to learn to solve your own problems, manage your own time, and clean up your own mess so you’re not living in filth. My short experience at “adulting” has given me a whole new appreciation for my parents. They have shown me God’s love through their helpful advice and encouragement as I figure out how to live as a human adult.

I don’t know what I’m doing, I don’t know where I’m going in life, and I don’t know how I’m going to get there. But God is with me through the communities I discover, in college, at church, and at home, just as God is with every one of us. We don’t have to know all the answers right away, which is good, because we can only see part of the picture in life. We only have to trust in the love of God shown through our relationships, and do our best to share that love with one another, and, God willing, we will all eventually see clearly.

Dear God, help me to trust in your love to guide me through this life, and help me to show that love to others so that they may too find their way. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
