Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. – Jeremiah 29:12

Let me share with you a story of Immanuel …

The summer after 10th grade, I attended a retreat with my youth group in the mountains of Colorado. One evening, the speaker challenged us to re-think how we pray – prayer is meant to be a conversation with God, which requires us to listen at least as much as we speak. He told us to find a secluded place, and see what happens when we say, “Ok God… I’m listening”.

I hiked down a rock ledge and sat atop a boulder at the edge of a cliff. During a life-changing conversation with God, my meditation was interrupted by bell tolls calling us back. As I became aware of my surroundings, I realized that it had gotten dark … really dark. And there were thick clouds covering the sky and obscuring the moon. I was not sure I could safely move from my current position and scale the rocks to return to camp. My mind raced as I tried to figure a way out of my predicament. I let out a nervous laugh and said aloud, “So, I’m in a little trouble here God… would you mind moving the clouds away from the moon?”

Instantly (and I use this word fully aware of its meaning and not intending any hyperbole), the clouds parted and formed a circle around the moon. I walked safely back to the chapel in a joyful, awe-filled daze. For the rest of the night, as I walked around camp and eventually back to my dorm, clouds filled the sky, but never even came close to the moon again. They remained in a perfect circle of love and protection.
Ok God… I’m listening.
