Daily Advent Devotional - 11/28

In Advent the readings from the Old Testament include passages from Isaiah. Isaiah is where we look for the promise of the Messiah to come and bring salvation to “the people who walk in great darkness.” It is also where we find images of God’s coming kingdom when peace shall reign and all shall live in harmony. Isaiah 11:1-9 gives us the image of God’s holy mountain where “the wolf shall live with the lamb and the leopard shall lie down with the kid.” The chapter begins with this image of the Messiah, “A shoot shall come out from the stump of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots. The spirit of the Lord shall rest on him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.” In Advent we celebrate that the one born in the stable is that shoot from Jessie and through him we will ascend God’s holy mountain.

One of my favorite hymn writers is Thomas Troeger. He wrote this text based on Isaiah 11:1-9:

Lions and oxen will feed in the hay,
Leopards will join with the lambs as they play,
Wolves will be pastured with cows in the glade-
Blood will not darken the earth that God made.

Little child whose bed is straw,
Take new lodgings in my heart.
Bring the dream Isaiah saw:
Life redeemed from fang and claw.

Peace will pervade more than forest and field:
God will transfigure the violence concealed
Deep in the heart and in systems of gain,
Ripe for the judgment the Lord will ordain.
Little child whose bed is straw,
Take new lodgings in my heart.
Bring the dream Isaiah saw:
Justice purifying law.

Nature reordered to match God’s intent,
Nations obeying the call to repent,
All of creation completely restored,
Filled with the knowledge and love of the Lord.

Little child whose bed is straw,
Take new lodgings in my heart.
Bring the dream Isaiah saw:
Knowledge, wisdom, worship, awe.
